2004-12-20 - Horn of Death

Rant show/hide

Today's strip guest stars Dave Shaw from Squawk Block. He's another webcomic artist who goes to Ramapo College (now my alma mater) who happens to be a very nice guy. He helped me get the Omni started when the horn went absolutely bonkers on me.
So it's been a month and 5 days. It's not the longest dry spell I've ever had, but it may be the longest without cause. I've got to start forcing myself to update regularly, as this is really a "slipery slope" situation. In gaming terms, slippery slope is when starting to lose makes you more likely to lose (like in some FPS', when you get blinded by a flash grenade... getting hurt makes you more likely to get hurt). The slippery slope here is that I feel kinda ashamed not having updated in so long, so it makes me not want to update any time soon.
I should have plenty to rant about too, but I don't really tend to catalog these things, so I always rant about whatever is at hand. As you can tell from the strip, the Omni isn't handling the winter so great. I had the problem with the horn, my locks and doors froze shut this morning (which was solved by a great lot of patience), and the engine has been giving me a little trouble recently. Thankfully I'm off from work next week, so I'll actually be able to leave it at the mechanic for a full looking over. Right now I'm hoping that a fuel line needs patching, not my engine block. To be honest, a problem that big isn't worth fixing. It would be cheaper for me to get another used car than to replace the engine. (not that I really have the money to do either)
It would be a shame to junk it, though. It's just 2000 miles away from the 100,000 mile mark, and I'd love to see that odometer tick over before the car takes a trip to the scrap heap.
In the land of video games, I've gotten back into Animal Crossing, and I've dragged Beth in with me. The first time she saw me playing, she thought I was retarded to like a game like that. The first time she played, though, it was a whole different story. The game is psychotically adictive, and if I can save enough pennies, I'll get a DS so that I can play it on the go. The only thing that concerns me is that I won't be able to bring my town over to the DS, or even visit it for that matter. Who knows, though, maybe they'll make a DS-GCN link cable at some point. But this is all out of my budget for now.
I've been programming a bit, too. Try out my not-so-amazing realtime raytracer (simple.zip). Remember to extract the whole thing or else the program won't be able to find the textures. I know it's not much, but I've gotta program so that I can show up the other webcomic artists. :P
Free iPod! (Some assembly required.) If you're going to print any of these, resize them in Photoshop (Image -> Image Size; turn of resampling) to about 141 dpi.Or, if you're feeling adventurous, find the HTML image dimensions, calculate the physical width at 72dpi, and then resize the image in Photoshop to that physical width (6 inches exact for the iPod 2).
Anyhow, I'm gonna cut it short because nothing else is really coming to mind. I'm looking forward to Christmas with the family, and especially to bringing Beth again, though I have no idea how the sleeping arangements are going to work. It'll be a tight squeeze, but I'm sure we'll all fit in that tiny house somehow.
