2003-08-18 - Otakon 2003 Part 5

Rant show/hide

NOTE: Otakon 2003 pics are still up on this page.
Well, I guess this rules out anyone else laying claim on the Crown Royal bottle. :P Seriously, this is starting to become a tradition since Bill & Jon decided to give Largo a bottle of Bombay Saphire. Now Jon, Bill, and I are trying to decide what liquor to buy for who next year. Basically, if we like your comic, you should come to Otakon next year as there may be free booze in it for you. Ian & Matt could be in for some booze. Maybe Tycho & Gabe. Maybe Terry. We would love to do something for Ian J., but he's not gonna be of age by next year. Maybe since he's a relatively new college student, we'll get him a bunch of Bawls or Jolt or something similarly caffinated.
I'd better not get carried away here, though... Don't wanna promise anything I can't deliver on. I'm outta college in December, and hopefully I'll get a job and a place to live lined up before leaving, but with the current job market and the fact that I'll have no savings when I leave don't bode well for me. I'm hoping to be the model of self-sufficency by the time Otakon 2004 rolls around, but that's a little after I'm gonna have to start paying my student loans, and I've got plenty of them to take care of. Michael Moore was right in Downsize This! when he said that you can't get anywhere in this country without going into serious debt.
Speaking of which, Beth got me a copy of Downsize This! by Michael Moore, and it's really an amazing read. You should pick up a copy if you want a funny, easy, but political read to close out the summer. I don't care if you disagree with his politics or his position, he's hilarious, and he was at least right about downsizing. In the middle of the dot-com boom, he was doomsaying, and rightly so. When you read this book with a bit of retrospect, it's really really interesting.
But I'm gonna take off now... you can pick up the book if you wanna... I know there are a bunch of you who are conservative and think that Moore is incredibly evil, especially since the Oscars. So Hollywood is ultra-conservative? Ha! They boo'd Moore off the stage for saying that Bush stole the election. Every liberal out there should be accusing Bush of wrong-doing all the time. After all, with assholes like Ann Coulter out there trying to justify her standpoint that liberalism is treasonous, we have to start fighting back. Fucking Ann Coulter, seeing her on TV is like watching a Law & Order: SVU. You just love to hate her for being so fucked up and wrong. Watching her defend President Bush simply because he's currently the masthead of the Republican party... WTF? I don't care if you admire him, if you want him to be right... he's wrong sometimes. Saying that he's right simply because he is the President (which she actually tried to do on Real Time until Bill Maher hung her out to dry for it). What a jerk. Apparently her idea of "arguing her point of view" was talking louder and longer than everyone else and not letting anyone finish a sentence.
When someone believes in propaganda like that, they may as well worship the back of a dvd box.
