2002-07-30 - Otakon Registration Line

Rant show/hide

Worst of all things at Otakon this year was definitely the at-con registration line. It was literally a 2 hr. and 45 minute line for us. Luckily, though, we met a friendly and outgoing guy named Gary from New York with whom we talked at length about Gundam, BAAF (Big Apple Anime Fest), AXNY (Anime Expo New York), college anime clubs, terrible costumes, and other nonesuch. A new friend, a good start to a con.
The other weird thing about the line was that they kept pushing us away from the elevator... like we were gonna rush it or something. I mean... yeah, we're technically an obstruction, but it's not like we would't have moved out of the way if anyone wanted to get through.
This Otakon was definitely the Otakon of the long line. The at-con reg. is a great example, but so was MAT3K and both Naze Nani Megatokyo panels. If you wanted to do most things, you had to wait in a line to do them. Thankfully, we haven't gotten to that point with screenings, except for the fan parodies. The convention started using bigger rooms for screenings this year. Hopefully they will remember to put the fan parodies in one of those auditoriums next year.
