A little laugh at Beth's expense. I love you! Don't get mad at me! :)
I'm just gonna take a second aside here to vent a little. Just a little venting about the absolute stupidity that goes into the Ramapo web site. The Provost wanted to have a page on the intranet to compliment his public web site (which is still in development). I have no problem with this. In fact, since the Provost is responsible for making a lot of policy decisions, it's only logical that he would have a site intended for the campus community as opposed to the a public one for the whole of the internet to view. What gets at me is that they gave us a hard deadline (this just-past Tuesday) upon which we were supposed to upload the site. They gave us a mere week's notice (and when you're a 4 person team managing a 6,000 page site, it's hard to get around to things in under a week), which we were easily capable of dealing with, as long as we shunted our attention away from other projects. Unfortunately, they were supposed to write all the text for the site, and they were taking their sweet old time with it. Stephen bugged them multiple times a day to get the text, and no dice. That was until Monday afternoon, when the wall of silence was breached and they started to trickle out a few word documents. These documents were poorly labeled, and littered with gramatical errors, which meant I had the fun double-duty of piecing together what-goes-where and making it into some form of readable English. And, I had 24 hours to do it, with pieces of text still missing.
So, I get all the pieces put together. I restructure the site based on a new menu layout. I remove entire sections because they say they probably won't get the text done on time. And the deadline stands. We're still waiting for a letter (from another department) to put on the site, and they're holding the deadline firm. Eventually at about 4:15 we get the letter and I've got about 15 minutes to get the text put in, give the site a final glance-over for good measure, and get the section online. You'd think that 15 minutes is enough time to copy & paste simple text, but then you'd be mistaken. Using Dreamweaver MX on OS X on a G3 600MHz iMac is like watching paint dry on a moist day. Still, I got the text in, reviewed the site one last time, and gave it to Trish to upload. We made the deadline, just barely though. And what if there had been an error that we didn't spot, like a compatability issue with a browser we don't normally use? It would've been up there all night, whereas if we had uploaded it in the morning, we could fix it before lunch. It just gets at me that the same people who set the deadline are the same ones who almost caused us to miss it, both by starting the project so late, and by withholding the text we needed to put the site together.
ARRRGH!!!!!
Well, that made me feel a little better.
