2003-07-10 - VG Violence Again

Rant show/hide

First off, as far as I know, this Senator doesn't exist. If I did happen upon an actual Senator's name, well it was by coincidence. I claim political ignorance on this one.
Of course, what I'm making fun of is (A) the terrible handling of the War on Terror, which may or may not exist anymore (haven't heard "War on Terror" in the headlines recently). 'Nuff said on that. (B) There was a recent article from the Philidelphia Inquirer that takes a very... um... conservative stance. Basically, it mentions very unrelated things (the kids were wearing black, they were unemployed) while discussing the mystery of their motivations. But then, it tried to draw a link between the kids' actions and video games. Well, this is my future career (if I'm lucky, at least), so I immediately am opposed to this notion. They mention that they carried knives and swords and dressed like Matrix characters, and that they played video games almost all the time. They tried to carjack some guy, which is what got them caught in the end. These actions surely could be inspired by various video games, but only in style. It's not as though these kids saw shooting in Vice City and decided "hey... shooting someone for real would be fun... why didn't I think of that before?"
But the funny thing is that they've decided to blame an online game called "Warriors of Freedom." Now, I haven't actually played it, but what I've seen from the few reviews out there is that it's a turn-based RPG that focuses around buiding a strong army of various fantasy races. Oh yeah... that'll incite violence. Now, I've never liked turn-based RPG's, but they've never driven me to murder anyone.
Perhaps this is a blessing in disguise for the video game industry. It sucks that anyone would ever even consider murdering another person, but these kids chose to give up before it ever reached that point. That means, unlike a lot of other school shooters, these kids are still alive. This will give the police a chance to get them some psychiatric evaluation. If there's a chance to see what drove them to these measures, it's surely a good thing. I am confident that these psychiatric evaluations will show what video game makers have always believed on this topic. Violent games do not cause violent behavior. Surely they attract violent audiences, and they possibly even encourage violent thoughts in violent audiences.
So all you conservative assholes should just shut the hell up on this one. You're wrong, and you've got to accept that. And in any case, these kids should never have had access to weapons in the first place. And don't give me that second ammendment bullshit. If the guns were responsibly owned and managed, then the unstable kids (and yes, the father knew the "leader" was unstable) would never have gained possession from their parents. Screw the second ammendment argument, this is definitely an example of stupidity in gun ownership. Do the rest of us a favor, people. If you're gonna own a gun, don't bitch at me about second ammendment rights, instead spend that time securing your weapon. Make it so that you're the only one who has access to it. That means a LOCKED lockbox or safe to which only you have access. That means, for rifles and shotguns, getting a trigger lock and keeping the key with you and secure at all times. Your gun will not make you secure when it's in someone else's hands.
