Holy crap, you would not belive the rage I was in today. I mean, seriously, I could've killed someone if it weren't for the fact that the day was going great right up until about 3:30 PM.
First, though, let me explain this strip, as it will make today's events a little more clear. Two weeks ago, right before Otakon, on Wednesday the tuition bills for the school were due (in case there are new readers, I attend Ramapo College) and because of my own stupidity and laziness, I fell short. I ended up having to borrow money from Bill Muller and Bill Venezia to make the payment. One thing was clear, though. I needed my paycheck for that week to make this all work. So I went to the Bursar's office on Wednesday to ask for a defferment until Thursday, when I would receive my check from the school.
I didn't walk away angry that day. A little nervous, yes, but not angry. The clerk was very polite to me,... basically told me what you see verbatum in the last panel when I first asked for a one day deferrment. He pointed out that it was a deadline that wasn't strictly enforced because of the weekend purging policy. His politeness and niceness were totally false and you could tell it was an act... but he put a lot of effort into it and I'm a sucker for good customer service.
But back to why I'm angry today. Well, I didn't get my paycheck that Thursday and I had to make up the difference via magic (too complicated to give a full account here) and with the help of Bill and Bill, I was able to pay off the bill without dipping into Otakon money. Bill Muller would have killed me if I did.
But why no paycheck? I asked payroll and they said that because we moved from green timesheets to yellow ones, they hadn't had time to convert the files over, so we would be recieving two paychecks the following pay day. (today)
So I go down there today, desperately needing some pocket money, but mostly jazzed to be paying back some of the aforementioned personal loans. Magically, though, my paycheck's gone. When I get to payroll to ask what the blankety blank is going on, they tell me that they have no timesheets from me (later discovered to be in their boss' office) and that I was not currently employed by the college. Y'see, at the end of the fiscal year (July 16th this year), the college goes through a re-hire process. Basically every student employee's contract runs out and those staying have to be renewed. My boss neglected to do so. So I spent all of my break time today going to payroll, finding out what went wrong, and then going to the Cahill Center to get the appropriate paperwork to fix it.
My boss, whom I both respect and look up to, almost got a fat lip from yours truly. Three things saved him though. (A) He wasn't there when I got back. (B) Since I got Boris' paperwork, I was reminded that I'm not alone in this problem. (C) I would've put my hand through the iMac monitor first because it deserves it. A month and a half between paychecks means my computer at work should fear for its miserable life.
