Oof, it's been a really really really long time ... So for those not in the know, Nintendo announced the official name for the Revolution, and that name is "Wii." That's right "Wii." Apparently that's supposed to be a stylized version of "we" because it should imply that it will bring people together ("we" symbolizing unity and "ii" symbolizing two people standing side by side). Perrin Kaplan of Nintendo of America said that they thought long and hard about the name and this is what they came up with. Well, obviously they thought about it a lot on their own, they obviously never bothered to talk to your average person on the street. Any random person would've chosen "Revolution" over "Wii" any day of the week. At any rate, it's only a few weeks until E3, and then we'll get some real info on the Wii. Hopefully seeing video of it in action will push away all the concerns over the controller and, now, the name. There are a few things I think they can do to propel the launch, however ...
- Make the nunchuck a standard pack-in. This will give developers a greater degree of choice when creating games.
- Pre-load a few good games onto the flash rom. Specifically, SMB/Duck Hunt and Super Mario World.
- Keep the online service free
- Make some games for adults to play and make them super-cheap downloads from the online service. For example, make a Sudoku game and have it available for download for $5. Then, make a new puzzle available for download each day.
- Really hit the streets and get a ton of people to play test the systems. They probably won't understand the controller at all until they actually hold it. Just camp out in the middle of a busy mall for a day or two.
Anyhow, I've been keeping myself busy even though I haven't been updating really. I've put up a new
personal website, and developed my own Content Management System to run it. Creating the site was fairly easy, developing a CMS from scratch was tough. But I'd better get to bed now since I've got work in the morning and it's going on 2:15 AM.
